On October 6, 2021, France will be honoring\u00a0family caregivers<\/a>, just a few days before World Mental Health Day. Providing care to an elder, a person with a disability, or someone who is ill can drain the caregiver\u2019s health, especially their mental wellbeing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

\r\n

According to the French non-profit Je T\u2019Aide, which supported the creation of National Caregivers Day in France in 2009, barely 38% of French people know what the term caregiver means. And yet caregivers are a large population:\u00a0one in five people(1) are currently caring for a family member with a disability, an illness, or a need for assistance with daily living.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Kantar study carried out for AXA on the position of caregivers employees in the company,\u00a090% of them encounter difficulties in the company<\/strong>,\u00a048% of whom consider that they are due to fatigue and 36% to mental stress<\/strong>, an even more marked finding among women (2).<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

What are the repercussions for caregivers\u2019 mental health?<\/h2>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\n\n

There are psychological repercussions. Emotional exhaustion, stress and sleep problems all take a toll on caregivers\u2019 mental health.\u00a0In addition to carrying out tasks enabling the person being cared for to continue living at home (personal hygiene, clothing, preparing meals, food shopping, housework, etc.),\u00a0caregivers must make difficult decisions, such as whether to move the person being cared for into a specialized facility.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

\r\n

In addition,\u00a0caregivers may find themselves caught up in family disputes, especially when siblings disagree about how to care for their parent. Caregivers can also be the target of aggressive or even violent behavior by the person being cared for.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n

\r\n

How can this affect their careers?<\/h2>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\n\n
\r\n

Again, as reported by Unafam,\u00a036% of caregivers consider that providing this support has hampered their career. This problem is especially experienced by women.<\/strong>
\nAmong employees who are also caregivers, 13.4% of the women found themselves obliged to switch to part-time work, compared with only 4.1% of the men. A total of 11.5% of women consider that providing care to a family member has undermined their career progression.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n

How can we help caregivers?<\/h2>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\n\n
\r\n

We can support caregivers and provide respite in several ways.<\/p>\n

Insurers can arrange support services enabling employees to better balance their family caregiving and their career.\u00a0\u201cThe program we offer includes counseling, home help, assistance with paperwork, and more, to bring caregivers tangible relief,\u201d<\/q>\u00a0says Patricia Delaux, Health Director, Personal Protection and Long-term Care, AXA Sant\u00e9 et Collectives.
\n<\/strong>
\nCarer\u2019s Leave<\/strong>\u00a0is another solution to relieve some of the caregiver\u2019s burden. Any employee caring for a family member with a severe disability (rating of 80% or higher) is entitled to the leave; it cannot be refused by the employer. Carer\u2019s leave lasts three months and is renewable, provided that it does not exceed a total of 12 months over the course of the worker\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

A respite allowance and donated days of leave<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0can also offer caregivers a mental health break and help prevent burnout.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n
