Depending on the kind of contract they have, these employees will have a particular status that significantly impacts their health and retirement benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n                                <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n    <div class=\"pe-section pb-0 pt-0\">\n        <h1 class=\"post-title fz-40\" id=\"if-the-employee-is-on-an-open-ended-assignment\">If the employee is on an open-ended assignment<\/h1>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wysiwyg \">\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/en\/parole-experts\/expats-during-the-health-crisis-how-to-ease-the-distance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Employees sent abroad on an open-ended assignment<\/a>\u00a0to work for a company\u2019s foreign subsidiary will sign a local employment contract with that subsidiary. Their French work contract will be suspended until they return to France. These employees are generally offered additional perks such as coverage of relocation expenses, travel expenses, and school fees for their children. Expatriates must enroll in the host country\u2019s social security system, but in most cases they will contribute less than in France and the corresponding health and retirement benefits will be less substantial. It is therefore in their best interest to take out supplemental individual or group insurance through their employer. Such insurance can complement coverage from the Caisse des Fran\u00e7ais de l\u2019Etranger (CFE, a French social security fund for expats).<\/p>\n<p>Employers often pay for the supplemental insurance and CFE contributions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3-1024x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3-1024x267.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3-300x78.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3-768x200.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3-1536x400.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.axa-assurancescollectives.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Article-Expatriation3.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n    <div class=\"pe-section pb-0 pt-0\">\n        <h1 class=\"post-title fz-40\" id=\"if-the-employee-is-on-temporary-assignment\">If the employee is on temporary assignment<\/h1>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wysiwyg \">\r\n<p>Employees sent abroad on a temporary assignment (for an average duration of 3 years) simply sign an addendum to their French employment contract. They continue to be employed by the company in France. As such, they remain covered by French social security. They pay into the system as though they were still in France and acquire the same health insurance benefits and retirement entitlements as employees who live and work in France. However, in practice, claiming social security and any additional French insurance benefits may not be as smooth as in France. For example, expats may need to pay costs up front and then claim reimbursement. For some host countries, it is strongly recommended to take out a supplemental health insurance policy specifically designed for expats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n    <div class=\"pe-section pb-0 pt-0\">\n        <h1 class=\"post-title fz-40\" id=\"if-the-employee-is-hired-locally\">If the employee is hired locally<\/h1>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wysiwyg \">\r\n<p>When hired locally in a foreign country, the employee\u2019s French work contract is terminated. Locally hired employees sign a new contract without the guarantee of returning to their former job in France.
